It’s Sea Turtle Nesting Season on the Crystal Coast

It’s Sea Turtle Nesting Season at Atlantic Beach

May is here and so is the start of the sea turtle nesting season here on the Crystal Coast. Every year many sea turtles come to our beaches in late spring to make their nests. And when you stay in one of our Oceanfront vacation rentals, you may have the opportunity to see a nest or even a turtle. Below we have a few things for you and your family to remember as you vacation on the Crystal Coast this year during nesting season.

When Does Nesting Season Start?

Many locals love this time of the year not only because of the warmer temps but also in hopes to see a sea turtle. Beginning on May 1st each year and ends around the end of October on the Crystal Coast. This is the start of the sea turtles nesting season and it’s something you don’t want to miss each year while on vacation. During the night is when you may see the turtles come to the shore and lay their eggs in the nests they have built. The nests are along the coast of North Carolina not just on the Crystal Coast.

Help Protect the Sea Turtles on the Crystal Coast

It’s Sea Turtle Nesting Season at Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach takes protecting our sea turtles very serious as they have made their home on our beautiful shore. You will see several local volunteers each morning looking for new nests that were built the night before. Once a new nest is located, then they will be marked and roped off to keep the eggs safe from predators. Each nest is monitored for the next 50-70 days for their safety and for any activity of when they are ready to hatch. Here are a few rules to follow while you are vacationing on the Crystal Coast during turtle nesting season:

  • Do not disturb any of the nests as we want to help keep them safe while they are there.
  • Don’t use your flashlight on your phone and don’t leave the outdoor lights on overnight at your Oceanfront vacation rental. Each turtle uses the moonlight to help guide them back to the ocean and any other light will disorient them.
  • If you or your kids dig any holes to build sandcastles, bury each other for fun or find any holes after the day, please remember to fill them in. Not only can the sea turtles but also other people can fall into the holes which can injury themselves.
  • Make sure that you clean the area completely from trash, or your beach equipment after a day full of fun on the sand. Please clean up after your day at the beach and don’t leave any of your beach equipment on the beach overnight.
  • Please keep the beaches clean from any trash or plastic on the days you spend at the beach. We like to keep our beaches free of trash to help with the new hatchlings as much as we can.
  • If you see a mother who is in distress, injured or any unmarked nests, please contact the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores at 252-247-4003.

Beach Bag Items

Beach Towels

Get Your Beach Bag Ready for Your Vacation

Whenever you go on vacation with kids you want to make sure that you have a beach towel packed for each member in the family. This will not only help with the arguments of whose towel is whose but will also help you keep up with the towels too. Bringing an extra towel with you is always a good idea especially if you have little ones with you. Having a beach towel with a different design can help each member in your group remember which one theirs is.

Sunscreen

Atlantic Beach sun is always hot during the spring through fall months and so sunscreen is a must for any beach bag. Use a sunscreen that is designed for your beach activities such as waterproof, sport, high SPF, etc.). Dermatologists suggests that you use a sunscreen with at least 30 SPF while you are enjoying the sunshine. And don’t forget to Reapply throughout your day as we don’t want you to ruin your vacation the very first day your here with a sunburn. If you do happen to get a little too much sun while on vacation, have a nice bottle of aloe in your beach bag as well.

Mesh Sand Toy Bag

Get Your Beach Bag Ready for Your Vacation

Anytime you vacation with the kids, you know that sand toys are a must have in your beach bag. We understand bringing sand back with you into your vacation house is not necessary and can be quite a hassle. So, if you pack a mesh bag such as a laundry bag or a bag specifically for beach toys can help eliminate the mess. Just throw the sandy toys into the bag, give it a good shake or two and leave the sand behind at the beach.

Hats & Sunglasses

Bringing sunglasses and hats can be very useful for anyone who visits the beach. The sun is much hotter than it is in the north, so we want to make sure that your eyes and face are protected. Having sunglasses will protect your eyes from the sun bright rays and will offer you some relief when trying to keep an eye on your little ones playing. Whether you have a floppy hot or a baseball cap, you will be happy that you brought these along with you. Don’t forget to pack one for everyone in the family.

Sand-Free Hack

Get Your Beach Bag Ready for Your Vacation

This is one item that you may not have thought about, but it is a must whenever you visit the beach. Whether you are staying in a vacation rental or you decided to drive your car to the beach access, sand will be all over you when you leave the beach. So, bringing baby powder in your beach bag will magically get the sand off of your body without irritation and leave a nice scent too. This is perfect for everyone in the family and not just the kids.

There are many other things that you can pack into your beach bag, but these are the must have items for your next vacation. If you haven’t made your reservations for your vacation, then check out our Atlantic Beach houses today. We can’t wait for your family to come and vacation with us!

With the high’s normally around 63 degrees, who wouldn’t want to spend the holidays there?
