Pirates don’t eat ice cream! Museum educator Christine Brin will be looking at clues from the remains of ships such as Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge and the British warship Mary Rose. Specifically, this program will look at what the pirates were eating, how they were preparing and storing their food and what materials they were using to cook and consume their food. This program will be appropriate for all visitors, including families with older children. Gam is defined as a friendly conversation between whalers or to visit with another ship while at sea.

Winter Taste of Core Sound | Celebrating the Old Hunting Clubs & Camps of Core Banks

Location: 1785 Island Road, Harkers Island
    Start Date: 02/23/2018 | End Date: 02/23/2018
Start Time: 6 pm | End Time: 9 pm

Core Sound’s Winter Taste will celebrate the good food and good times of the old hunting clubs and camps of Core Banks — from the legendary Davis Island, Pilentary, and Hog Island clubs to smaller hunting camps from Portsmouth, Ocracoke and Salter Path.

A feast featuring fresh seafood and wild game will honor the old club food traditions. Coming from the memories of the men and women who were cooks at the camps, the menu includes fried oysters, stewed redheads, scallop fritters, and of course cornbread and light rolls. Don’t miss a true Core Sound experience. After all, like Pam Morris (whose father, uncles and brother spent many a-night cooking and eating at Jul’s camp at the Evergreens) says, “Everything tastes better on the Banks.”

The evening’s program will feature decoy collector and historian Doily Earl Fulcher. Doily, who has spent a lifetime in these camps, will bring to life the “clubhouse decoys,” hunted over and passed down for generations.

The evening includes two auctions events — a live and online silent auction. The live auction benefits the Museum’s Redhead Society and features two select redhead decoys each respectively representing contemporary and old working decoys. The contemporary decoy is provided by Jack Gardner, the museum’s Carver of the Year and this year’s Heritage Decoy, an Eldon Willis–Elmer Salter, is donated by Dr. Stan Rule.

Carvers of the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild will be donating decoys for the silent auction and is an effort to offer a selection of prized decoys from today’s Guild carvers uniquely branded as a part of the Taste of Core Sound Series. This collection of decoys honors the Guild’s continued vision to perpetuate the art of decoy carving and supports the museum's ongoing efforts to document the history of water fowling Down East. Decoys will be offered online beginning Feb 19th.  Go to www.coresound.com for links to the live silent auction.

Seating is limited. Tickets may be purchased by calling the museum store 252-728-1500.

Brown Bag Gam: The Golden Age Revived? Modern Piracy

    Location: 315 Front Street, Beaufort
    Start Date: 03/07/2018 | End Date: 03/07/2018
Start Time: 12 pm | End Time: 1 pm

In the early 21st century large-scale piracy off the coast of Somalia emerged as a significant threat to merchant shipping in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. Driven by the collapse of centralized government, despoliation of indigenous fishery grounds, access to entrepreneurial finance (both local and international), opportunistic regional political support, and easy access to a target-rich environment, Somali pirates exploited an international shipping industry unaccustomed to the threat of robbery on the high seas. International efforts to enhance Somali government, and both military and civilian maritime responses in largely suppressing the threat by 2015. But piracy did not go away. It continues today. Gam is defined as a friendly conversation between whalers or to visit with another ship while at sea.

Two of the main goals of the Festival are to present a diverse music line-up and to introduce attendees to fresh musical acts. In addition, the BMF strives to be a family-inclusive event and to provide an immersive experience for all ages over two days with food trucks, a family area with children’s activities, and a beer garden highlighting North Carolina craft brews.
